For our last Egyptian Thanksgiving we took a cruise on the Nile from Aswan to Luxor on a dahbiya, which is a small-ish sailboat. We explored ancient temples, ate barbecue, relaxed on the deck, and eventually got kinda sick. But it was a blast. Here are some of the highlights from before I got too sick to take more photos.
We started at the city of Aswan (note Elephantine Island in the first photo) and took a leisurely ride up, exploring our boat along the way.
Our first stop was the temple of Kom Ombo, which includes a depiction of Cleopatra being crowned and also had a cute cat and a nilometer.
Then we went back to chill on the boat.
Our next stop was the old royal quarry, where the dug out the stones that they used to build the pyramids and everything else. The artisans carved out little houses for themselves in the stone, and I found it very cool that the chisel marks are still visible.
We stopped by a little village to see everyday village life. I'll be honest, it was boring. Villages are boring. Later, Asa challenged Laura to a race on the riverbank while we waited for dinner.
Our next stop was Edfu temple, but by then I was feeling quite poorly.
After that, I was too sick to have fun, but I was happy to stay on the boat and rest. I did manage to take this awesome picture one morning.
