Wanting cold for Christmas, but unable to take more than a few days off from work, we zipped up to Amsterdam, an appropriately chilly but affectingly beautiful city that I probably now want to live in.

We walked until we needed coffee and cocoa, and then we indulged. Julian more than the rest of us.

Even though we live in Africa, we still went to the zoo. Because monkeys.

But then we went back out on the town, which looks lovely in black and white.

We also look lovely in black and white. Maybe everything does.

We took an evening canal cruise to watch the light festival. Most of the festival was crap (the faint red line that appears in some pictures is Ai Wei Wei's contribution—it represents something something borders privilege something something China) but the tour guide was funny and the boat was cool. Also, there are a lot of ships in the harbor, which look ghostly at night.

My favorite artworks, plus a few canal shots.

I don't know why I so badly wanted to take bicycle pictures. These were the best. They still aren't that good, though.

Some other town shots, plus the dessert that blew Julian's mind.
